EPA Launches Fortune 500 Challenge (NW Current)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched a "Fortune 500 Green Power Challenge" for 2007. The campaign urges large companies to make a greater commitment to renewable energy.

According to an article in NW Current, the EPA introduced the 13-month campaign on Dec. 4, 2006, at the annual Renewable Energy Marketing Conference in San Francisco.

The campaign asks Fortune 500 companies to double current clean energy purchases from 2.5 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2006 to 5 billion kWh in 2007.

Today, 13 percent of Fortune 500 companies currently participate in the EPA's Green Power Partnership, reports NW Current. The EPA would like to increase that figure.

Corporations who are significantly increasing their green power purchase levels include Cisco Systems Inc., Hewlett-Packard (HP), Staples, Starbucks and Wells Fargo, according to the EPA.

Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) purchased 185 million kWh of wind energy in 2006, or 20 percent of the energy used at its U.S. and Canadian stores.

Energy Priorities published a case study of Starbucks' renewable energy certificates (RECs) purchase in 2005 from San Francisco-based 3 Phases Energy.
