BPA Charts its Grid Future (Smart Grid News)

Terry Oliver, Chief Technology Innovation Officer of the Bonneville Power Administration, highlights three emerging issues: intermittency, interaction and immediacy. He also predicts unpleasant surprises for utilities that fail to recognize the growing power of reliability rules and equipment standards.

Part of Terry Oliver's job is to find ways to "sail closer to the wind," as he puts it -- to operate more efficiently in BPA's mission to provide hydroelectric power to Pacific Northwest utilities. That involves technology R&D, which BPA had for many years regarded as not their role.

In "BPA Charts its Grid Future" Smart Grid News editor Jesse Berst reports that BPA's renewed R&D effort started with a very disciplined planning effort. That planning took 18 months and included contributions from more than 80 internal experts. The result was a detailed path forward in energy efficiency, security, renewables, and transmission.
