Solar Thermal Energy an Option in Large Facilities (WAPA)
Solar thermal doesn't get enough attention. Its energy output is used for building space heating, refrigeration and air conditioning, hot water, steam for industrial processes, drying, and electric power generation.

This non-technical article in the newsletter of the Western Area Power Administration outlines the possibilities for using solar thermal in large buildings and industrial facilities.

The author includes information on cost effectiveness and incentives, as well as links to a few manufacturers and case studies.
Some major solar energy installations getting media attention, such as Nevada Solar One, are not photovoltaic -- they use solar thermal technology to generate heat, then use the heat to generate electricity through Stirling engines or steam turbines.
