Data Centers Suck Down Energy, Mostly for AC (Seattle P-I)

In follow-up to my earlier article "How Green is Your IT?" here's an AP article on cooling data centers.

The Associated Press story ran in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (where I write another blog simply called "Energy"). The story is about the energy consumption associated with cooling a data center.

"Depending on the configuration and the equipment involved, as little as 30 to 40 percent of the juice flowing into a data center is used to run computers. Most of the rest goes to keeping the hardware cool, since heat saps performance."
