Open Networks for Building Control Systems - Building Priorities Briefing
This is the premier edition of the new Building Priorities Briefing. This month we'll see what decisions went into the design of a new mixed-use campus to reduce their costs throughout the building lifecycle. The Energy Minute this month is about open versus proprietary networking methods for building controls. And Denis Du Bois interviews the consultant who designed the networked controls system for the Albert L. Schultz Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto, CA. (podcast)

Program notes
Construction crews broke ground in September 2007 on a mixed-use campus in Palo Alto, California. It has several green-building features, for example, it's built on a contaminated site, so the ground floor will be a parking garage, with all of the commercial and residential spaces above, on a concrete podium. The owners intend for the campus to be LEED Certified when it opens in the fall of 2009.As with most new construction, this campus has automated controls for almost everything -- including lighting, heating, air conditioning, security and access control. By themselves, some of these systems can save substantially on energy costs and pay for themselves within a few years. Unlike most facilities, this campus will have these systems networked together, creating some very interesting possibilities -- and efficiencies.
The campus is the Taube-Koret Campus for Jewish Life, which will also be home to the Albert L Schultz Jewish Community Center and to 899 Charleston, an independent-living facility. There will be 12 buildings on 8.5 acres.
Denis Du Bois interviews Alan Sataloff, the chief executive officer of the community center, who has been very involved in the design of this campus.
