Will New Reactor Make Us Say "IMBY!"?

Micro nuke power plants the size of a hot tub would fit in a back yard and power a small town.

Hyperion Power Generation is taking orders for nuclear power plants that can be delivered on a truck.

...Five years from now, for $20 million.

The company envisions using the plants to power remote applications, such as oil fields or villages.

From the company's web site:

"Perfect for moderately-sized projects, Hyperion produces only 25 MWe — enough to provide electricity for about 20,000 average American sized homes or its industrial equivalent. Ganged or teamed together, the modules can produce even more consistent energy for larger projects."

The starry-eyed prose on the company's site goes on to describe miniature nuclear power plants as the answer to just about every world problem -- from global warming and water shortages to poverty, disease, and social unrest. Just truck one of these into a developing country and don't you worry about the waste, proliferation, or a meltdown.
