Smart Meters Read $4.2 Billion in Stimulus

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed into law this week calls for a $4.2 billion grant program that would support smart grid and smart metering projects.

"This is a huge victory for forward-looking utilities and consumers who want to address U.S. energy independence and global warming," said Richard Mora, CEO of Landis+Gyr, an energy management company serving utilities in North America.

Smart metering solutions provide utilities with a two-way flow of data that helps them to manage energy use, efficiency, demand response and billing. Consumers get improved usage information and greater ability to reduce overall energy costs and carbon footprints.

"Our current economic challenges are serving as a catalyst for dramatic change," Mora said. "People realize we need a new approach on the big issues. One of those issues is how to manage energy better. Government support is further strengthening the utility business' cases for smart metering solutions that are continually improving as new functionality drives more utility and consumer benefits."

A Brattle Group study found that a five percent drop in peak demand nationally would eliminate the need for 625 peaking power plants. The Department of Energy estimated that if the U.S. energy grid were five percent more efficient, it would be the equivalent of eliminating the fuel and greenhouse gas emissions of 53 million cars.

I'm a current owner of an electrical bussiness and an electrical efficiency bussiness, for the last 15 months I've studied green energy products and energy saving devices extensively (also section 179)stimulas package. The owners and makers of these devices only push one product and thats thier own.I set my self up as a distributor for all these products.one product can't make a difference by it's self but 10 can.I have presented this to schools, bussinesses and churchs. All say the same thing.THEY don't have the funding for smart grid tech. This is simply a web based bar graph that shows where and what consumes the power and also shows what they are paying in peak times from the co-op,and every device that is put in place,it would show the true savings.every product pays for itself in 16 to 28 mths or we would not sell it or install it.please call me if you have any information on how to get our schools and goverment building federal funding. We can save 20-40% on every building.my # is 803-474-3522 thanks,MICHAEL
