Cleantech Venture Capital Investment Rebounded in Second Quarter 2009

KPCB led a rebound in clean technology venture investment in the second quarter of 2009, after two consecutive quarterly declines, according to a joint Deloitte and Cleantech Group report.

Cleantech venture investment rebounded last quarter, after having declined significantly in the fourth quarter of last year and the first quarter of 2009, according to the report. The second quarter total is up 12 percent from the previous quarter, although down 44 percent from the same period a year ago.

The leading sector was transportation vehicles, biofuels and advanced batteries. Solar saw its lowest level of investment in over three years, with only $114 million invested, down from a high of $1.2 billion invested in 3Q08. Most investors with significant solar holdings did not increase their exposure, the report says.

North America accounted for 66 percent of the total, while Europe and Israel accounted for 21 percent, India for 11 percent, and China for one percent.

The average round size was $12.9 million, up from $12.3 million the previous quarter. Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers led the investor pack with five rounds, followed by Khosla Ventures, Braemar Energy Ventures, Robeco Alternative Investments, Draper Fisher Jurveston, and VantagePoint Venture Partners.
