It's a global issue that requires immediate action. Energy efficiency offers the most immediate way to combat climate change: reducing electricity consumption has a direct effect on carbon emissions from fossil fuels.
Technologies are available today that can run buildings more efficiently and reduce their energy usage and carbon footprint by a third. Greenbuild acknowledges the size and immediacy of the opportunity, and treats it with a sense of urgency.
Building owners and designers are here to learn how to reduce the cost of operating and maintaining a building while maintaining the comfort and productivity of its occupants. In the process of achieving those goals, they'll cut energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions attributed to the building, improving its carbon footprint.
Exhibitors are readying their booths to demonstrate those technologies when the expo hall doors open tonight at 5:30 for a reception for arriving architects, builders, owners and media. The expo is on two levels in the North Hall: the subterranean level (where attendees register), and the third floor.
I arrived early for some meetings before the show begins. I rode Valley Metro light rail to the Phoenix Convention Center, registered, and took a quick look around. Here are a few photos.

When attendees step off the light rail train, this is how Greenbuild 2009 will visually greet them.

Registration staff is prepared for the crowds that show up tomorrow morning to pick up their badges and bright-orange bags. Attendees should nonetheless arrive early and expect some wait time.

Exhibitors are setting up their booths on the two floors of expo hall.
